Armwrestling began in ancient Egypt, as is evident from a painting dating to 2000 BC found in an Egyptian tomb. Also called Indian wrestling, the modern version of the sport became popular in the 19th century.
It was initiated in India in the 1970s and it is estimated that there are currently more than 1800 armwrestling clubs across the country. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab and Assam boast the highest number of armwrestling enthusiasts. It would indeed be a moment of pride and glory to see an Indian make it to the top level in armwrestling!
